CARY, N.C. — Ian Anderson pitched well enough during last week’s USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, that he is still competing this week for a spot on this year’s 18U national team.

After pitching at the Tournament of Stars, Anderson stayed in North Carolina for national team trials, which end Saturday. Originally, 108 players were trying out, and now Anderson — a rising senior at Shenendehowa — is one of 40 remaining players.

This round’s cuts will bring the player pool down to 28, while the final roster will include 20 players.

Anderson, a 17-year-old from Rexford, went 6-1 with a 0.66 ERA in 531⁄3 innings across 11 appearances during his 2015 high school season. The right-hander struck out 91 batters — 51 more than his combined yielded hits, walks and hit-by-pitches.

Nationally, he was an American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings High School All-America third-team selection; locally, he was recognized as the Suburban Council Pitcher of the Year.
